"Un premier grand voyage est comme un premier grand amour...la découverte de soi, des autres"
"A first big trip anywhere is like the first time you fall in love...its about discovering about yourself and others".
I met Marguerite at a house party of people I barely knew and she barely knew too. As we got talking about our stories we agreed that saying travelling helps you discover yourself is, at this point, the most frustrating understatement of all the ups and downs you will discover on the road. Much like your greatest love story or relationship - you love, you learn, you laugh and you cry. But you will never fully be able to make people understand the intensity of it all.
When one says it helps you discover who you are, it helps in a way to discover the good about yourself, but also the bad. It is a little like having a relationship with someone who will confront you and challenge you day after day about the things you never wanted to look at - that one annoying habit you have when you're feeling anxious - that fear you've been holding on to for too long and that annoying comfort zone you never really manage to get over... When you´ve got only yourself to rely on - it is then that we end up seeing who we really are - most likely because all of our actions depend on us and because we have no one else to blame but ourselves...but also no else to love but ourselves.
