Tall, quite, but with a sarcastic sense of humour - I met Ilya at the doorstep of my hostel - a boyish but reassuring smile hidden away underneath a black hoodie - one hand holding a beer, the other tucked into his pocket as if he was waiting for a bus but not really counting the minutes. And though he seemed like any other tourist that came to this city - I learned later that he had come to Madrid with not even a toothbrush or a suitcase, but just with an open mind to saying yes to whatever came his way and the need to move somewhere for the week. Be it that we travel to go to places, or that we travel to escape places - in the end it seems that travel is a way of dealing with what our minds and thoughts don't want to quiet down at times. And sometimes spontaneity or impulse is the only way of dealing with it.

"Will you continue to make yourself be chosen - or will you finally choose?" A few words left by Mara as she left Madrid for a job interview here - be it in work or in love or in life - it is true to say that it is hard to tell which way to choose. when not choosing any way is already a choice. But if there's anything I can say about her personality, it is that she may wonder about it, but ultimately - from the fact that she came all the way to Madrid to try a new job and a new life - and as I saw her connect with strangers here - she would rather choose than not choose at all. As they say perhaps - The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts...(And for the record - Mara kicked ass, and got the job) “La ignorancia y el oscurantismo en todos los tiempos no han producido más que rebaños de esclavos para la tiranía” - Emiliano Zapata // "Ignorance and obscurantism have never produced anything other than flocks of slaves for tyranny"
Alejandro was passing through Madrid as he was on his first trip through Europe. As I had a chance to meet him on his first stop - Madrid - and then 2 months later back here as he had passed through all the major cities in Europe - I asked him what his impressions were about the differences between South America and Europe. His response was that never had he seen such differences between the rich and the poor before...While his country may not be as developed as other European countries, he said that a man in Mexico begging the streets would not be as ignored as he would be in Europe. There we exceptions of course - yet it was one of the most striking differences he could tell me first...Makes you wonder... "Getting lost in the world is the best way to find yourself"
Esther wore a smile like she wore her jewellery - self-made and authentic. Passing by Madrid to stock up on leather for her next jewellery creations, she managed to travel for her work and for her pleasure all the while selling her creations at the age of 23. A dream job one would say, that she very modestly talked about. I spent perhaps only a couple of hours with her, but it was enough to see the common views we shared on the world. Aside from jewellery she also holds a job as a therapist focusing on assemblage point therapy - aimed at releasing energy and suffering from particular tension points we retain over the years - a path she chose to follow as she herself had been sick for a couple of years and found no solutions until she started viewing her body and health differently. Esther holds a page you can consult for more information on her practice on the following page if you're interested to know more about it : http://www.healthinharmony.eu/ "Los gatos andan con pasitos de gato, y la niebla con pasitos de niebla" // "Cats walk on little cat feet and fogs walk on little fog feet" - Richard Brautigan
note : see Carl Sandburg's 1916 poem Fog for a clearer understanding : "The fog comes on little cat feet. It sits looking over harbor and ciry on silent haunches and then moves on." "El hombre que puede (hacer amenos), no tiene miedo a nada" // "The man who can (do with little), does not have any fear"
