"Nunca Cambies - Te Quiero Mucho" // "Don't ever change - Love you much".
I met Harika at a Halloween party in 2014. If there was anything I could say about her, it was that she had something in her aura that called for contradictions - whether it was the fact that she was the only one with a clown face painted on while others had opted for sober Halloween costumes - or maybe the air guitar moves she pulled off solo on the floor as she turned on AC/DC on a stereo system that had been playing all hits by Lady Gaga in an all too queer party all night - it was the fact that she couldn't care less that appealed to me.
As we got talking about her life - a life of movement and living in Africa and South America for a big part of her life - she left me with a quote that reminded her of the messages her high school friends had left her in her year book as she moved away. A reminder maybe of how when we move or travel, our surroundings care enough to wish us to not change - to keep intact what it is that they saw in us in the first place. And though it may seem obvious, it is perhaps one of the biggest challenges - to always travel far enough but never too far away from the people that love us
